چکیده

In our course in biophysics for undergraduate students we have introduced the scientific area of hemorheology. In one of the practical exercises we study the effect of cellular and extracellular factors on polymer induced RBC aggregation. Over a number of years we have investigated the reproducibility of the model experiments concerning this last phenomenon with the aim of testing the possibility of performing scientific investigations during routine student’s practice. Qualitatively the results obtained are in accordance with the published studies in the literature from this scientific area. The reproducibility of the experiments is relatively good the mean coefficient of variation (CV) of the ZSR values at a particular polymer concentration is between 7 to 16%. Improvement may be achieved by better control of the mixing procedure during the preparation of the RBC suspensions. As a whole the results are encouraging and give us confidence that model scientific investigations during routine student’s practice are possible and realistic.

Why Don’t They Do What We Want Them to Do?

This paper describes an investigation into the factors affecting a student’s decision whether to construct a state transition diagram in order to verify the correctness of a concurrent program, or whether to verbally verify the program. We conjectured that the advantages of the visual formal tool would cause it to be adopted as a routine part of the students’ practice, but in fact the verbal de...

Influence of HDL subfractions on erythrocyte aggregation in hypercholesterolemic men. PCVMETRA Group.

Recent studies have suggested that rheological mechanisms may be involved in the pathogenesis of ischemic syndromes in hyperlipidemias. We investigated the association between erythrocyte aggregation and components of lipoproteins in the blood of 60 normotensive, hypercholesterolemic men aged 45 +/- 8 years. The rheological parameters assessed were aggregation index (AI) and disaggregation shea...

Evolution of erythrocyte aggregation in transmural myocardial infarction survivors. A 12-month follow-up study.

We have read with interest the recently published article by Sargento et al. [1], regarding the haemostatic, haemorheologic and inflammatory profile in transmural myocardial infarction survivors during a 12-month follow-up period. With respect to haemorheological parameters, the authors found that plasma viscosity and fibrinogen concentration decreased over the 12-month period while haematocrit...

Evaluation of red blood cell aggregation in diabetes by computerized image analysis.

Red blood cell (RBC) aggregation has been widely studied and its importance is well established in the rheology of microcirculation. RBC aggregation is a major factor responsible for the flow properties of blood. Increased RBC aggregation has been observed in several pathological states. Therefore, the measurement of erythrocyte aggregation is rheologically important for quantifying flow abnorm...
